As we get further into the winter months, it’s best to be prepared for unexpected storms and freezing cold days. As a homeowner, this can be a big task, and it’s easy to forget some of the many things you need to do to winterize your home this season. Unfortunately, since we are in the state of Ohio, we will get unpredictable weather, so our experts at New Albany Heating & Cooling put together a complete list of everything you need to do to keep your home winter-ready.
- Insulate Your Pipes- When temperatures drop below freezing, pipes (and the liquid inside of them) become prone to freezing. This can cause water to expand and the pipes to burst, resulting in costly repairs and destructive water damage. Insulating them with plastic foam pipe wrap can help to keep them from freezing.
- Clear Out Your Gutters- It can be easy to put off cleaning gutters, but it’s a necessary job that isn’t difficult and will keep them working properly. First, you will need to remove any debris, branches, or acorns from your gutters. Doing so will ensure you do not run into any other issues with your gutters.
- Check Your Roof- Check to see if you see any cracks on either side of your roof. Also, look for any exposed nails. If you notice exposed nails in your roof’s shingles or even in the base of your roof, you may need to get an expert to inspect further.
- Buy a Snow Shovel, and Keep It Inside Your Home or Garage- Yes, we know. This sounds a bit cliche, but trust me, this is important. Maybe you hire professionals, but it could be so bad that no one can get to your home in time. In addition, you never know when the snow will pile up so high, you can’t make it to the shed.
- Caulk Any Cracks Around the Outside of Your Windows and Doors- Sealing gaps around doors and windows with a tube of chalk will help you prepare for winter. You can get it at your local home depot or hardware store. If you see any daylight peeking through, conditioned air can get out, and bugs can get it. So this will eliminate all of that.
Unpredictable weather is expected, so don’t get too far in the months to come without checking into these five tips. This can save you money in the long run.
